Tantrokta Ratri Suktam

The Tantric Ratri Suktam is a profound hymn that praises Goddess Durga as the cosmic night—Ratri—who creates, sustains, and dissolves the universe. She is Vishweshwari, the mother of worlds, the force behind the maintenance and destruction of creation, and the divine sleep (Nidra) of Lord Vishnu. Her radiance surpasses all, and even gods depend on her power.

Brahma glorifies her as Swaha, Swadha, the essence of the Vashatkar, the immortal syllables, and the eternal sound-source. She is the one who resides within the three sacred syllables, and even within the half-syllable that transcends normal articulation. She is Sandhya, Savitri, and the supreme mother.

The entire universe is created, supported, and dissolved by her alone. During creation she is the creative power, during sustenance she is the nourishing force, and during dissolution she becomes the destructive Mahamaya. She is Mahavidya, Mahamaya, Mahamedha, Mahasmriti, Mahamoha, and Mahadevi — the supreme source of wisdom, memory, intelligence, delusion, and spiritual awakening.

As Prakriti, she manifests the three gunas—sattva, rajas, tamas—and governs all existence. She is Kalaratri, Maharathri, and Moharathri — fierce forms that represent the deepest mysteries of time and consciousness. She is Sri, Ishvari, Hri, Buddhi, Shanti, Kshanti, Tushti, and Pushti — all divine qualities personified. Armed with sword, spear, mace, discus, bow, and other weapons, she appears both fierce and infinitely beautiful.

All existence—known or unknown—depends on her power. Even Vishnu and Shiva rely on her grace to act in creation. Thus no one is truly capable of praising her fully.

The hymn closes by invoking her to delude the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, awaken Vishnu from yoga-nidra, and empower him to destroy them. She is the one who restores balance in the cosmos through her mysterious and compassionate intervention.
