This sacred hymn praises Surya, the lord of the day, and Chandra, the lord of the night—two cosmic forces who sustain the entire universe. Surya radiates blazing brilliance while Chandra spreads soothing lunar nectar. Both were born from the divine lineages of Kashyapa and Atri, becoming the guiding lights of creation. They rule over time—day and night, heat and coolness, seasons and cycles that maintain life’s harmony. Surya governs the zodiac sign Leo and Chandra governs Cancer, blessing all beings with vitality, peace, and emotional balance.
They ride their celestial chariots—Surya with seven horses and Chandra with ten—dispelling darkness and ignorance. As witnesses to every action in the universe, they protect dharma and nourish the world with rain, crops, healing energy, and spiritual radiance. They are linked to Vishnu’s divine sight and form the wheel of Rudra’s cosmic chariot. Surya is dear to the lotus, Chandra to the chakora bird, and both illuminate the heavens with their sixteen kalas. They destroy negative forces like Mandeha, remove sins, and keep the cosmic order in motion. Their connection to rivers like Yamuna and Narmada reveals their purifying nature.
