Meaning
The 108 names of Vinayaka, set out for archana - om gajaananaaya namah, om ganaadhyakshaaya namah, om vighnaraajaaya namah, and so on down the list. It is the namavali a purohit reads while the householder offers garike at each name, and the one families use at home on Chaturthi. Ganesha Chaturthi and the monthly Sankashti are when it is heard most.
Significance
Ganesha is worshipped before everything else, so this list gets used more than any other namavali in a Kannada household - at the start of a marriage, a housewarming, a new shop, the first page of an account book. The names carry the story with them: Gajanana for the elephant face, Ganadhyaksha for the leader of the ganas, Vighnaraja for the one who rules over obstacles, which is worth pausing on. He is not merely the remover of obstacles; he is their master, which means he can set them as well. That is why he is asked first and not last.
Tradition holds that archana with these names before beginning any work clears the way, and that the Sankashti observance in particular relieves difficulty - sankashta is trouble, and Sankashta-hara Chaturthi is named for taking it away. The namavali itself is a worship list and does not carry closing fruit-verses; the promises belong to the vratas and the stotras built around the same names.
How and when to chant
Chaturthi is the tithi. Sankashti Chaturthi, in the dark fortnight, is observed with a fast broken after moonrise, so the archana is done in the evening and the last of it waits for the moon. Ganesha Chaturthi in Bhadrapada is the big one; in Karnataka it arrives as Gauri-Ganesha, with Gauri installed the day before and Ganesha the next morning.
Garike - durva grass - is the offering that goes with the names. Twenty-one blades, tied in small bunches, is the common count, and the grass is preferred in the three or five-bladed form. Then modaka or kadubu, and in Karnataka homes also chakkuli, panchakajjaya and a plate of fruit. Red flowers suit him; tulsi is kept away, with the old reason still repeated in households. Sit facing east, light the lamp, do a short Ganapati puja first, then read the names one by one and offer garike at each.
If you want to do the archana at a temple, Idagunji in Uttara Kannada and Anegudde near Kumbhashi are the Karnataka kshetras where people travel for it, and there is Kurudumale in Kolar for those in the eastern districts.
