Meaning

Veerabhadra Ashtottara Shatanamavali is the list of 108 names of Veerabhadra, the fierce form who came out of Shiva's anger when Daksha held his yajna and left Shiva out of it. It opens Om Veerabhadraya Namah, Om Mahashuraya Namah, Om Rudravatarakaya Namah. In Karnataka he is a household deity for a great many families, so the namavali is heard at home as often as in a temple.

Significance

The third name settles the theology before the list has properly begun. Rudravataraka means the descent of Rudra, so Veerabhadra is not a separate deity who serves Shiva; he is Shiva in one particular mood. The story behind it is told in the Vayu, Linga and Shiva Puranas, with real differences between them, and the shared outline runs like this. Daksha held a great yajna and slighted Shiva. Sati, his own daughter and Shiva's wife, went to it and gave up her body there. Shiva tore a lock from his matted hair and struck it on the ground, and Veerabhadra rose from it with Bhadrakali beside him. The yajna was broken up, Daksha was beheaded, and later he was restored with the head of a goat. That is the whole reason for the second name, Mahashura, the great warrior. He is not a warrior by trade. He came into existence already fighting. The names go on to gather the fierce epithets, but they keep returning to the Rudra link, which is what keeps the fierce form inside Shiva rather than outside him. Tradition holds that families who keep Veerabhadra as kuladevata recite this list at the annual jatre of their own temple as well as at home.

How and when to chant

Monday is the usual day, as with the rest of the Shiva family. Bathe first, light a lamp, and keep bilva leaves, vibhuti and a rudraksha if you have one. Karthika masa draws the longest recitation of the year in most Shiva households, and families with a Veerabhadra kuladevata also keep it for the days around their own temple jatre, which varies from village to village in north Karnataka. Many Veerabhadra temples there hold a jatre with the deity's standard carried in procession, and the namavali is recited before setting out. One round of 108 is standard; those doing archana offer a bilva leaf or a flower at each name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Veerabhadra?
Veerabhadra is the fierce form that rose from Shiva's wrath when Daksha held a yajna and slighted him, and Sati gave up her body there. Shiva struck a lock of his matted hair on the ground and Veerabhadra arose from it, with Bhadrakali beside him. He broke up the yajna and beheaded Daksha.
Is Veerabhadra a form of Shiva or a separate deity?
A form of Shiva. The third name in the namavali says so directly: Rudravataraka, the descent of Rudra. He is not a servant or a general who works for Shiva but Shiva himself in one particular mood. The list keeps returning to that link even while piling up the fierce epithets.
Which Purana tells the Veerabhadra story?
The Daksha yajna episode is told in the Vayu Purana, the Linga Purana and the Shiva Purana, and the versions differ from one another in detail. The shared outline is the same: the slighted Shiva, Sati's death, the lock of hair struck on the ground, Veerabhadra and Bhadrakali, and Daksha restored with a goat's head.
Why is Veerabhadra important in Karnataka?
Veerabhadra temples are common across north Karnataka, and a great many families there keep him as kuladevata, particularly in the Veerashaiva tradition. That is why the namavali is as much a household text here as a temple one, and why village jatres built around a Veerabhadra temple are a fixture of the local calendar.
Which day should the Veerabhadra namavali be recited?
Monday is the usual day, following the rest of the Shiva family. Karthika masa is when most Shiva households recite the longest. Families who keep him as kuladevata also take it up around their own temple's annual jatre, and those dates vary from village to village, so follow your family's own keeping.
What is offered while reciting?
The Shiva set: bilva leaves, vibhuti, a lamp, and a rudraksha if the house has one. For archana, a bilva leaf or a flower goes down at each of the 108 names. Nothing beyond the lamp is required. Families with a kuladevata temple often follow whatever that temple's own custom is.
Who is Bhadrakali in relation to Veerabhadra?
In the Daksha yajna account the two arise together, Veerabhadra from the lock of hair Shiva struck on the ground and Bhadrakali alongside him. They are worshipped as a pair in many temples, and the Veerabhadra Kavacham names both together as its devata, which reflects the same pairing.
Is this namavali suitable for reciting at home?
Yes. A namavali is a list of names framed with Om and namah, needing no initiation, and in Karnataka it is very much a home text. Children learn it by repeating names after an elder. A purohit is called for a formal abhisheka or a jatre ritual, not for household recitation.
