Meaning

One hundred and eight names of Tulasi Devi, beginning Om Shree Tulaseedevyai Namah. Unlike most archanas this one is offered to a living plant, usually the one standing in the tulasi katte in the courtyard. Karnataka households use it at the evening lamp, on Kartika days, and above all at Tulasi Vivaha on Utthana Dwadashi.

Significance

The plant is treated as the goddess herself, not as her symbol, and everything in the practice follows from that. She is watered in the morning and given a lamp in the evening; she is circumambulated; her leaves go into Vishnu's naivedya and into the mouth of the dying with a few drops of Ganga water. The customs of restraint are as telling as the offerings — leaves are not plucked on Ekadashi, nor after dark, nor by someone who has not bathed, and many will not pluck on a Sunday. Tulasi is offered to Vishnu and withheld from Ganesha. Tradition holds that she was a woman, Vrinda, before she was a plant, and the tellings of how that happened differ enough that it is better to say so than to choose one. At Tulasi Vivaha on Kartika Shukla Dwadashi, the katte is whitewashed and drawn on with rangoli, sugarcane and amla branches are tied at its corners, and she is married to Krishna in the form of a salagrama — a wedding the family conducts in its own courtyard.

How and when to chant

Evening, at the lamp, is the daily time; the morning water can come with it. Stand before the katte, say the names one by one, offering akshate or a flower at each — not tulasi leaves, which are hers. Kartika is her month, and the lamps in the katte niche are lit through it. On Utthana Dwadashi, the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, the courtyard is prepared from the afternoon, the marriage is done after dusk with the salagrama, and the archana comes before the offering of avalakki and fruit. Women of the house circumambulate the katte an odd number of times, usually three or seven.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Tulasi Vivaha and what happens on that day?
Kartika Shukla Dwadashi, called Utthana Dwadashi in Karnataka, when Vishnu is held to wake from his four months of sleep. The katte is whitewashed and decorated, sugarcane and amla branches are tied at its corners, and Tulasi is married to Krishna in the form of a salagrama after dusk.
Why is tulasi not offered to Ganesha?
It is the one well-known exception in household practice: tulasi goes to Vishnu and to his forms, and is withheld from Ganesha, for whom garike grass is used instead. Explanations are given in different Puranic tellings and they do not agree, but the practice itself is uniform.
On which days should tulasi leaves not be plucked?
Ekadashi is the day most families keep strictly, and no one plucks after dark or without having bathed. Many avoid Sunday as well. When leaves are needed on a restricted day, those plucked the previous day are used, or the plant is left alone entirely.
What is a tulasi katte?
The built platform, usually brick or stone and whitewashed, that holds the plant in a Karnataka courtyard. Most have a small niche on one side for the evening lamp. It stands where the household passes it daily, which is the point — the worship is short, repeated and woven into the day.
Can the archana be done for a tulasi in a pot?
Yes. A plant on a balcony or windowsill is worshipped the same way, with the morning water and the evening lamp. The katte is a form the custom took in houses that had a courtyard, and its absence changes nothing. Keep the plant where it gets morning sun.
Who was Tulasi before she was a plant?
Tradition holds she was a woman named Vrinda, and that her devotion and her chastity are what she carries into the plant. The Puranic accounts of how the change happened differ considerably. Rather than assert one telling, it is honest to say the story is told in more than one way.
What is offered during the archana?
Akshate, flowers, water, and a lamp. Tulasi leaves are not offered, since they are the goddess herself. Naivedya on Utthana Dwadashi is usually avalakki with jaggery, coconut and fruit, along with sugarcane and amla from the decoration; on ordinary evenings nothing more than the lamp is expected of a household.
