Sri Somasundara Ashtakam

The Somasundara Ashtakam is a sacred hymn sung by Indra in praise of Lord Shiva as Somasundara, the beautiful divine lord adorned with the crescent moon. It glorifies Shiva as the supreme, non-dual, all-pervading Brahman who is beyond mind, form, and time. Shiva is described as the knower, the knowledge, and the object of knowledge — the essence of all existence.

The hymn proclaims Shiva as the unseen yet omnipresent reality worshipped in all great sacrifices such as Ashwamedha. Knowing Him leads sages beyond karma into the state of absolute liberation. It reminds us how Markandeya attained immortality by worshipping Shiva, and how even Lord Vishnu received the Sudarshana Chakra by pleasing Him.

He is the creator, sustainer, and dissolver of the universe, the pure consciousness and bliss from which nothing is higher or separate. The four Vedas themselves bow before Him, acknowledging Him as the lord of all knowledge and wisdom.

Merely bowing to Somasundara grants prosperity, success, and all divine siddhis. Even a glimpse of Him destroys severe sins like brahma-hatyā instantly. The hymn concludes declaring that even Brahma and Vishnu cannot perceive His complete cosmic form, emphasizing Shiva’s incomparable supremacy.
