Meaning
This hymn “Vande Shambhum Umaapatim” is a powerful and poetic praise of Lord Shiva, describing His various divine forms that protect, uplift, and bless the universe. Each verse ends with the affirmation that Shiva is the refuge of devotees and the giver of boons.
The first verse praises Shiva as the husband of Uma, the source of the universe, the wearer of serpents, the holder of the deer, the lord of all beings, the sun–moon–fire-eyed one, beloved of Vishnu, and the refuge of all devotees.
The second verse glorifies Him as the wanderer of worlds, the destroyer of Andhaka, the crown-jewel of gods, the moon-like radiant one, the adorned serpent-wearer, the embodiment of consciousness, and the bestower of grace.
The third verse describes Shiva as the inconceivable, indivisible, pure, primordial root, destroyer of sacrificial pride, the eternal truth, and the tranquil form beyond fear. He is the destroyer of illusion and sustainer of cosmic order.
The fourth verse illustrates Shiva as the master of the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space. He is the slayer of Tripura, the charioteer of Brahma, and the lord of supreme splendour.
The fifth verse adores His five-faced form, three eyes, blazing forehead eye, celestial matted locks holding the moon and the Ganga, and His ash-smeared body with tripundra markings.
The sixth verse praises Him as the destroyer of Time, poison-holder, all-pervading one, ocean of compassion, remover of dangers, and worshipped by sages and gods alike.
The seventh verse describes Him as the immeasurable, imperishable, enemy of Yama, bearer of serpent ornaments, thousand-faced one, and incomparable in glory.
The eighth verse highlights Shiva as the destroyer of desire, the wise one, Virupaksha, lord of spirits, giver of divine kingdoms, and wielder of the trident.
The ninth verse praises Him as the subtle, infinite, primal, remover of darkness, worshipped by Ravana, Nandi, Bhringi, and protected by Garuda.
The final verse praises Him as the purifier, cosmic essence, lord of Indra, wish-fulfilling tree for devotees, Ganga-bearing one, lord of Ambika, and the master of Ganas.
