Sri Shiva Ashtakam 2

In this second Shiva Ashtakam, the devotee openly admits all forms of human weakness—desires, confusion, ignorance, pride, restlessness—and surrenders completely to Lord Shiva. The mind wandering in all directions due to hopes and desires, the devotee feels lost, disturbed, and unable to find peace, praying to Shiva to rescue him.

He acknowledges the impurity and impermanence of the human body, understanding that pride in such a body is futile. Afflicted by lust, delusion, and worldly temptations, he confesses his entanglement in Maya and admits that he has turned away from serving Shiva’s lotus feet.

The devotee recognizes that he has spoken untruths, followed wrong paths, lost awareness of his real Self, and fallen prey to the six inner enemies—lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride, and envy. Neglecting the scriptures, avoiding Shiva’s worship, and disregarding Vedic duties are all confessed with humility.

He further admits to wrongful earnings, impure habits, immoral attractions, and a polluted lifestyle. Struck by the three types of worldly suffering, yet unable to follow the path to the highest truth, he sees himself as fallen and helpless.

In the final verse, he prays: “Just as a father protects his child, O Lord Shiva, protect me. You are the Father and Helper of the entire universe. Though I have committed many mistakes, You are the ocean of compassion—save me, O Shambho.”
