Meaning

In this hymn from the Kurma Purana, Lord Krishna Himself praises Lord Shiva with deep devotion. He begins by bowing to Shiva, meditating upon Him within his heart, and recognizing Him as the eternal cause of all beings. Krishna declares that sages call Shiva the supreme origin, the source of Brahma, and the lord of the universe.

Shiva is the embodiment of sattva, rajas, and tamas. All creation arises through Him. The Vedas proclaim Shiva as the eternal truth and the ruler of the cosmos. Krishna acknowledges Shiva as Brahma, Vishnu, Agni, Surya, Prana, and all elemental powers — the single divine essence pervading everything.

Sankhya philosophers praise Shiva as the attributeless supreme, while yogis meditate on Him within the heart. The gods worship Him as Rudra and Agni. Krishna surrenders completely, saying, “I take refuge in You alone, O Lord of Lords.”

A single flower offered to Shiva destroys all bondage and washes away all sins. His lotus feet grant liberation and fulfillment. Krishna praises Shiva as the endless, self-luminous, immortal truth — the source from which all existence arises and into which all dissolves.

Subsequent verses worship Shiva’s various forms: Neelakantha, Tryambaka, Bhairava, Kapalika, Trident-holder, Destruction of Kama, the Lord of Time, Pashupati, Yogeshwara, and the supreme who transcends Maya. Krishna repeatedly bows, requesting Shiva to grant all auspicious desires with compassion.

Finally, Krishna prostrates at Shiva’s feet, and Shiva, lifting him gently, blesses him with words as deep as thunder.
