Meaning
Sri Kamala Stotram is a comprehensive hymn praising Goddess Kamala (Mahalakshmi) as the supreme source of purity, creation, sustenance and dissolution. She is described as the embodiment of Om, the essence of pure sattva, and the mother of the gods. The five elements and subtle principles reside in her being, and she is accessible only through the highest spiritual wisdom.
Devas, asuras, gandharvas, yakshas and celestial beings continually praise her because she transcends the worlds, duality and the limitations of nature. She is the creator of the universe, the sustainer and the one who protects all beings seeking refuge. She is Brahma’s consort, Vishnu’s beloved Mahalakshmi, and Shiva’s Haimavati—in every divine realm she stands as the Supreme Mother.
She manifests as Durga, Kali, Chandika, Siddhalakshmi, Yogamaya and Yogini. She appears as a child, a youth, an old woman—showing she is time and the cycle of life itself. She is beyond the three gunas yet the origin of all qualities. As tapas, knowledge, prakriti and pure consciousness, she is the beginning, middle and end of the cosmos.
The hymn explains how beings, deluded by her maya, continue in the cycle of birth and death until they gain her divine knowledge. Like the illusion of silver in mother-of-pearl, the world appears real until illuminated by her wisdom. Under her command the sun moves, the moon shines and the universe functions.
The stotram beautifully illustrates her presence across sacred places: Brahmaloka, Vaikuntha, Amaravati, Lanka, Kashi, Mathura, Dwaraka, Ayodhya, Gaya, Kanchi, Manidvipa, Kamakhya, Kalighat and many more. She is the universal protective force across all realms—earth, heaven and netherworld.
The concluding verses (phalashruti) declare that reciting this stotram removes diseases, fears, sins and miseries; grants prosperity, happiness, spiritual liberation; and confers the merit equal to bathing in a crore sacred rivers. With her grace, no desire remains unattainable.
