Meaning
In this sacred hymn, Devi herself requests that the greatness of Kālikā be revealed for the welfare of devotees. Dakṣiṇāmūrti responds, declaring that those who worship and regularly recite this stotra obtain Kāli’s full grace. The hymn begins by praising Kāli as the victorious Mother — Maheshwari, Mahālakṣmī, and Mahākālī — whose power encompasses liberation, protection, and creation.
She is described as loose-haired, four-armed, Veera Kāli, and Mṛtyu Kāli — the sovereign over life and death. Though fearsome in appearance, she is Bhadrakālī for her devotees, granting auspiciousness and peace. She is the embodiment of knowledge, the ruler of all vidyas, the beloved of Shiva, and the divine Saraswati who bestows eloquence and wisdom.
Her form shines like a blue cloud, draped in celestial garments, existing beyond beginning, middle, and end. She is the giver of prosperity, destroyer of obstacles, protector from enemies, and source of all strength. As Jagadamba, she appears seated on lion or elephant, representing valor and sovereignty. She is nirguṇa yet saguṇa, foundationless yet the foundation of all.
Chandika, Chamunda, Mahamaya, Siddha-stutā — in all these forms she protects, nourishes, and uplifts her devotees. Even the gods — Hari, Rudra, and all deities — worship her and derive power from her. The final verses reveal that the reciter of this stotra destroys the sins of countless births, gains mastery over scriptures, becomes eloquent like Brahma, and attains sharp intelligence, poetic brilliance, prosperity, beauty, and eightfold wealth. He gains progeny, fame, victory, and divine proximity.
Ultimately, the stotra assures that the devotee attains the eternal presence of the Goddess at the end of life.
