|| Iti Sri Kali Ashtottara Shatanamavali Sampoornam ||

Meaning

Sri Kali Ashtottara Shatanamavali is the hundred and eight names of Kali set out as an archana list: a name, then namah, then a pinch of kumkuma. It opens Om Kalyai namah, Om Kapalinyai namah, and by the twentieth name the pattern is unmistakable - Kali, Kapalini, Kanta, Kamada, Kamini, Kalika. The syllable Ka returns again and again, the letter the tradition treats as her own.

Significance

A namavali is an archana list, not a stotra, and this one carries no closing phala-shruti of its own; what it is for comes from the tradition that uses it. With Kali that answer is abhaya - fearlessness. The Devi Mahatmya has her spring from Ambika's brow, black with anger, to take Chanda and Munda, and it is when she brings back their heads that Ambika gives her the name Chamunda. Teachers read the khadga in her hand as the cutting of ahamkara and of clinging to time, not as violence, and the kapala as what is left when the head has finally stopped arguing. Tradition holds that saying these names slowly before a ghee lamp settles a frightened mind. That is the tradition's claim, and it is offered as such.

How and when to chant

Tuesday and Friday are her weekdays; among tithis, amavasya. In Bengal the great night is the Kartika amavasya that falls with Deepavali, when Kali Puja is done after dark. In Karnataka she is usually approached inside Durga worship, as Kalika or Chamunda at the village Devi gudi, rather than through a separate Kali puja - both usages are old. Bathe, sit facing north or east, light a ghee lamp, make the sankalpa, and go name by name, offering kumkuma or red hibiscus at each namah. One round runs eight to ten minutes. Evening after sunset suits her better than midday. The namavali itself needs no diksha; the bija mantras that upasakas add to it do, and belong with a guru.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Kali and why is she shown so fiercely?
Kali appears in the Devi Mahatmya as the form Ambika releases from her own brow when Chanda and Munda attack - gaunt, dark, garlanded with heads, swallowing the asura army. The fierceness is directed at what destroys, not at the devotee. Her own people call her Ma, and the same text has her laugh before she strikes.
Why do so many of the 108 names begin with the letter Ka?
Because the list is built on the ka-kara, the syllable the tradition assigns to her. Kali, Kapalini, Kanta, Kamada, Kalika and dozens more share it, which makes the namavali easy to memorise and gives the archana a drumbeat. The ordering of names after the first few varies between printed editions.
Can I recite the Kali Ashtottara at home without initiation?
Yes. A namavali is a list of names offered with kumkuma and a lamp, and no tradition restricts that to initiates. What does need a guru is the bija-mantra japa that upasakas do alongside it, and any homa. Keep to the names, keep it simple, and there is nothing to be uneasy about.
Which day and time are best for Kali archana?
Tuesday and Friday, and amavasya above other tithis. Evening after sunset is the usual hour rather than midday. In Bengali practice the Kartika amavasya that coincides with Deepavali is her night; in Karnataka she is more often worshipped during Navaratri as Kalika or Chamunda at the local Devi temple.
What should be offered during the archana?
Kumkuma is enough, one pinch at each name. Where flowers are available, red hibiscus is the traditional offering to Kali, and a ghee lamp is lit before starting. Some households add a plain naivedya of jaggery rice or payasa at the end. Nothing elaborate is expected of a householder.
Is Kali the same as Chamunda and Kalaratri?
They are closely tied but not interchangeable. Chamunda is the name Ambika gives Kali after she kills Chanda and Munda, so it is a title she earns. Kalaratri is the seventh of the Navadurga worshipped on the seventh night of Navaratri. All three are dark, fierce forms of the one Devi.
How is the ashtottara different from the Kali Sahasranama?
Length and use. The ashtottara is 108 names and takes under ten minutes, which suits a daily lamp and a working household. The sahasranama runs to a thousand names and is usually taken up on a vowed day, during Navaratri, or as part of a longer parayana. Both address the same Devi.
Does the Kali Ashtottara have a phala-shruti?
The namavali as circulated does not carry one. Phala-shruti verses belong to stotras, and a namavali is the archana list pulled out of that setting. Any promise you see attached to it comes from the surrounding tradition or from the parent stotra, so treat such lines as tradition rather than text.
