Meaning

Sri Durga Ashtottara Shatanamavali is the hundred and eight names of Durga used for archana, opening Om Durgayai namah, Om Shivayai namah, Om Mahalakshmyai namah. It is the list a priest reaches for at a Devi temple when a family asks for a kumkuma archana, and the one most Kannada households recite through the nine nights of Navaratri.

Significance

Start with the word itself. Durga is built from durga, a fort or a hard place, and the tradition reads the name two ways: she is the one who is difficult to reach, and she is the one who carries you across durgati, the hard passage. The Devi Bhagavata adds a third reading, that she took the name after killing the asura Durgama. All three are old and none cancels the others. The third name in the list, Mahalakshmi, is worth pausing on - within a few syllables the namavali has placed Shiva's consort and the goddess of abundance in the same person, which is exactly the claim the Devi Mahatmya makes when it says the one Devi appears as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasarasvati. The list carries no phala-shruti of its own. What tradition holds is plain enough: the archana is done for protection over a household, and Ashtami during Navaratri is when that is felt to be strongest.

How and when to chant

Navaratri is her season - the Sharad Navaratri of Ashwayuja that ends in Vijayadashami, and Chaitra Navaratri in spring. Durgashtami is the day families most often book an archana. Through the year, Tuesday and Friday are her weekdays, and the morning after bath the usual hour. The method is simple: a ghee lamp, a sankalpa, then the names one at a time with kumkuma offered at each namah. Red flowers if you have them. In Karnataka the archana is as often done before the local form of the Devi - Chamundeshwari, Banashankari, Marikamba - as before an image named Durga, and the same 108 names are used. A round takes eight to ten minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the name Durga actually mean?
Durga comes from durga, a fortress or a place hard to get through. She is read both as the one who cannot be reached easily and as the one who takes you across a hard passage, durgati. The Devi Bhagavata adds that she earned the name by killing the asura Durgama.
Can the Durga Ashtottara be recited every day?
Yes, and many households do exactly that. It takes under ten minutes with kumkuma offered at each name. Daily recitation asks no vow and no priest. If you cannot manage every day, keep Tuesday and Friday, and the nine nights of Navaratri, and let the rest follow.
Is Durga the same as Parvati?
The tradition treats Durga as a form Parvati takes, not as a separate goddess - the Devi Mahatmya has the goddess emerge from the combined tejas of the devas to kill Mahishasura, and that warrior form is Durga. In daily worship most people make no sharp distinction between the two.
What should be offered during the archana?
Kumkuma at each name is the core of it, with a ghee lamp lit first. Red flowers are the usual offering, and a simple naivedya of payasa or jaggery rice at the end. During Navaratri many households also offer green bangles, a blouse piece and a coconut as bagina to married women.
Can men recite the Durga Ashtottara?
Yes. There is no restriction on who says a namavali. In practice the Devi archana in Kannada homes is often kept by the women of the house, but fathers and sons recite it too, and temple archakas who perform it are usually men.
May I recite during menstruation?
Households differ, and it is worth following what your own elders keep. The common middle position among teachers today is that mental recitation and reading are never barred, even where touching the puja articles or entering the temple is set aside for those days. Do what leaves your mind settled.
How do the nine nights of Navaratri relate to this namavali?
The nine nights are usually mapped to the Navadurga - Shailaputri through Siddhidatri - whose names come from the Devi Kavacha of the Saptashati. The 108-name list is a separate text and is recited on any or all of the nine days, commonly with the day's Navadurga form kept in mind.
Ashtottara or sahasranama - which should I choose?
Choose by the time you actually have. The 108 names fit a working morning; the thousand names suit a vowed day, a Navaratri sankalpa or a temple seva. Consistency with the shorter list is valued more in practice than an occasional long recitation left half finished.
