Meaning
The Durga Arya Stavam is an ancient hymn narrated by Vaishampayana and attributed to the teachings of great sages. It praises Goddess Narayani as the supreme ruler of the three worlds and glorifies her countless forms, powers, and divine manifestations. The hymn declares her to be Siddhi (success), Dhriti (courage), Kirti (glory), Sri (prosperity), Vidya (knowledge), Sandhya, Ratri, Nidra, and even the fierce Kalaraatri. Every cosmic force, gentle or terrible, resides in her.
She is Arya, Katyayani, Kaushiki, the mother of Siddhasena, the fierce Ugracharini, the powerful Mahabala, and the divine protectress Jaya, Vijaya, Pushti, Tushti, Kshama, and Daya. She appears in mountain peaks, forests, caves, rivers, and wild regions—ever present to protect devotees in dangerous places. Tribals, hunters, and forest-dwellers worship her naturally, showing her universal accessibility.
She moves with lions, tigers, goats, and cocks, bearing the trident and spear, radiating the power of the sun and moon. She manifests in auspicious lunar days and is the sister of Balarama, the mother of beings, the refuge of all creation. As Nandagopa’s daughter, she grants victory to the gods. She is Roudri, Night, Sandhya, Death, and the accepter of offerings.
She is Lakshmi and Alakshmi for the destruction of demons, Savitri—the mother of mantras, Sita—the earth sustaining farmers, Surasa of the Nagas, the shore of the ocean, Brahmavidya of wisdom, Rohini among stars, Purṇima in the moon, Saraswati for Valmiki, Smriti for Vyasa, Dharma in sages, and the mind-born power of gods.
The hymn asserts she pervades everything, both moving and unmoving. She protects in battles, fires, riverbanks, forests, travels, exile, imprisonment, and in the face of enemies. Devotees who place their heart and mind in her are freed from sins and blessed with grace. Reciting this hymn daily with purity grants results in three months, special boons in six months, divine vision in three months of worship, and complete fulfillment within a year.
