Meaning

The Devi Atharvashirsha, also known as the Devi Upanishad, reveals the supreme essence of the Divine Mother. When the gods approach Her asking, “Who are You?”, the Goddess declares Herself as the form of Brahman—the ultimate reality. She is both nature and consciousness, the void and the non-void, bliss and non-bliss, knowledge and ignorance.

She is the five elements and beyond them, the entire universe itself. She is the Veda and non-Veda, existence and non-existence, the past and future, above, below and all-pervading. She moves with Rudras, Vasus, Adityas, Visvadevas, Indra, Agni, Ashvins, and nourishes all gods including Vishnu, Soma, Prajapati and others. All cosmic functions—creation, preservation and dissolution—move by Her power.

The Goddess proclaims Herself as the sovereign ruler, the source of all yajnas and their fruits, the origin of all beings, the support of the universe. One who understands this attains Divine wealth and spiritual realization.

The devas praise Her as Mahadevi, Shivā, Prakriti, the one who destroys demons and protects all beings. She is Vāc, the goddess of speech, Durga the destroyer of obstacles, Saraswati, Lakshmi, Mahavidya, Kalaratri, Skandamata and countless other forms. She is the cosmic Maya, the enchanting force behind creation.

She is the inner Self of all, the remover of sorrow, the supreme liberator. The text describes Her as unknowable, limitless, unmanifest, unborn, one yet many—because She alone pervades everything.

Meditating upon Her as the radiant, compassionate, three-eyed mother who grants boons and destroys fear leads to liberation.

The phalaśruti proclaims immense power: reciting the Atharvashirsha destroys sins, removes major difficulties, grants victory over death, ensures divine presence in worship, bestows purity and protection, and brings spiritual perfection.

Benefits:
• Removes sins, fear, suffering, and obstacles
• Grants spiritual power, clarity, liberation
• Protects from danger, negative energies, and misfortune
• Gives vāksiddhi (perfection of speech)
• Ensures divine presence in rituals
• Overcomes great dangers and even untimely death
• Strengthens devotion and inner transformation
