The Pratyangira Ashtottara Shatanamavali is the hundred and eight names of Pratyangira Devi, also called Atharvana Bhadrakali. She is described as lion-faced and dark, and the tradition places her outside ordinary household worship: she is one of the deities a teacher hands over with instruction rather than one a devotee picks up from a printed book. Significance

The name is usually read as prati plus angirasa - the one who turns back what the Angirasa rites send out. That reading is the whole of her character in the tradition. She is invoked as a shield, the force that returns harm to where it came from, and the Shaiva accounts connect her rising with the Sharabha episode, when Shiva takes a form to cool the fury of Narasimha that will not subside. Several of the 108 names are frankly ferocious. Teachers read them as wrath aimed at the reciter's own fear, sin and clinging - not as instructions to be turned on another person.
