Brahmanda Mohana Durga Kavacham

The Durga Kavacham (Brahmandamohanam) is a powerful protective hymn revealed by Lord Narayana to sage Narada. It declares that the mantra ending with “Om Durgāyai Namah” functions as a divine wish-fulfilling tree for devotees. Narayana states that this six-syllable mantra grants immense merit even equal to Vishnu’s grace by mere acceptance, showing its unparalleled spiritual potency.

The kavacham invokes Durga to guard every part of the body using sacred seed syllables—Om Durgāyai Namah, Om Durgē, Hreem, Shreem, Kleem. These protect the head, throat, shoulders, back, chest, arms, and the entire body. Whether awake or asleep, these divine vibrations act as a shield around the devotee.

The eight directions are protected by the Goddess in different forms—Prakriti in the east, Chandika in the southeast, Bhadrakali in the south, Maheshwari in the southwest, Varahi in the west, Sarvamangala in the northwest, Vaishnavi in the north, and Shivapriya in the northeast. The Mother of the universe safeguards the devotee on land, in water, and in the sky.

Because of its rare and sacred nature, Narayana warns that this kavacham should not be given to just anyone. Only after properly worshipping one’s Guru with respect should a person receive and wear (or recite) this kavacha. Whoever does so, he says with certainty, attains protection and purity equal to Lord Vishnu Himself.
