Bilvashtakam 2

Bilvashtakam 2 glorifies the supreme spiritual power of offering a single bilva leaf to Lord Shiva. The three-leafed bilva represents Shiva’s three eyes, the three gunas, and His three divine weapons. Offering even one pure, unbroken, soft bilva leaf destroys sins accumulated over three births. The scripture declares that such an offering equals the merit of donating thousands of maidens, mountains of sesame seeds, and even golden mountains.

Living in Kashi, beholding Kalabhairava, and witnessing Madhava at Prayag—rare spiritual fortunes—are described as equal to the merit gained by offering a single bilva leaf. Observing Monday fasts, performing sacred rituals, marriage ceremonies, installing Shiva Lingas, and even obtaining progeny—all the blessings arising from these acts are said to be contained within the simple act of offering bilva to Shiva lovingly.

An unbroken bilva leaf offered with devotion grants the merit of chanting the thousand names of Shiva. The vision of Uma-Maheshwara, Nandi, and Shiva smeared in sacred ash is symbolically realized through bilva worship. Even the merits of offering salagrama worship, digging ponds, creating wells, performing countless yajnas, and the highly exalted Ashwamedha rituals are considered equivalent to the merit of bilva archana.

The stotram declares that merely seeing a bilva leaf gives merit; touching it destroys sins; and worshipping with it removes even the most intense karmic impurities. Reciting this sacred Bilvashtakam in the presence of Lord Shiva leads the devotee to the abode of Shiva, granting liberation and divine grace.
