Meaning
The Attalasundara Ashtakam is a beautiful hymn composed by King Vikrama Pandya, praising Lord Shiva as “Attala Sundara” — the supremely beautiful, powerful, compassionate, and all-pervading form of the Divine. Each verse highlights one aspect of Shiva’s cosmic and graceful nature.
The hymn begins by describing Shiva’s mighty arms shining like the Kodanda bow, symbolizing protection and divine strength. He is the One who can consume the entire universe yet remains the refuge of devotees. The second verse praises the Neelakantha form — Shiva who held the deadly Kalakuta poison in His throat to save creation, while the moon and all the arts shine on His crown.
Next, Shiva is worshipped as the Lord beyond time — the one who transcends past, present, future, and even the concept of time itself. He is also the formless, complete, blissful reality praised by Goddess Lakshmi herself. Shiva is then described as the embodiment of grace, whose very form destroys sins and removes the impurities of the Kali age.
The hymn then portrays Shiva as the Lord of the Kadamba forest, the wish-fulfilling divine tree for devotees, and the destroyer of Kama during His cosmic wrath. He is the supreme cause of creation, preservation, and destruction of countless universes — the absolute master of time and cosmic cycles.
Shiva is also highlighted as the compassionate protector who removes suffering, sin, and adversity from His devotees. He is the root cause of all worlds and the ultimate source of bliss, adored as the family deity of royal dynasties.
The concluding verse states that reciting or listening to this Ashtakam grants auspiciousness, prosperity, fulfillment of desires, and divine grace.
Benefits:
• Brings Shiva’s protection, peace, and divine blessings
• Removes sins, obstacles, and suffering
• Grants stability in devotion and clarity of mind
• Helps fulfill righteous desires and spiritual upliftment
