Ardhanarishvara Ashtakam

The Ardhanareeswara Ashtakam praises the divine form where Shiva and Parvati exist inseparably as one. This sacred form symbolizes the perfect harmony of masculine and feminine energies, creation and destruction, compassion and power. The first verses portray the contrasting yet complementary beauty of the two forms—Parvati with dark, cloud-like curls and Shiva with radiant matted locks. Though visually distinct, both are the universal masters beyond all dualities.

The stotram then highlights their divine ornaments: Parvati adorned with shining jewels and Shiva ornamented with serpents. Despite these differences, both are manifestations of the same supreme energy. Parvati embodies grace and auspiciousness, while Shiva represents renunciation and transcendence. Together, they complete the cycle of life and spirituality.

The hymn also describes the creative cosmic dance: the gentle lasya of the Goddess that symbolizes creation and the fierce tandava of Shiva representing dissolution. Their eyes—one soft like a blooming blue lotus and the other sharp with cosmic fire—show their roles as the universal mother and father. They together nurture, protect, create, and withdraw the universe.

Finally, Ardhanareeswara is described as all-pervading—within and outside, above and below, in every direction. The stotram concludes by stating that anyone who reads or listens to this hymn with devotion becomes blessed in the world of Shiva.
