Abhilasha Ashtakam

The Abhilashashtakam is a profound hymn that describes Lord Shiva not merely as a deity but as the Supreme, non-dual Brahman — the one without a second. The hymn strongly asserts that all diversity seen in the world is only an appearance, while the ultimate truth is One. Shiva is praised as that Absolute Reality beyond form, beyond attributes, yet appearing as many forms for the sake of devotees.

The first verses declare that the universe is non-dual, and Shiva, the One Rudra, alone stands as the essence of everything. Though He performs creation, preservation, and dissolution, His true nature remains formless, timeless, beyond qualities. Like illusions of a snake in a rope or silver in an oyster shell, this world is also a projection that dissolves when the truth of Shiva is known.

The hymn continues by explaining that all powers in nature — the coolness in water, heat in fire, radiance of the sun, fragrance of flowers — arise from Shiva alone. His presence is subtle, beyond physical senses, yet He perceives, moves, sees, and knows everything without sensory organs. This demonstrates His boundless divinity.

Even Vishnu, Brahma, Indra, gods, or great yogis cannot fully comprehend Him. Only a true devotee who surrenders to Him can realize His essence. Shiva has no birth, lineage, form, or limitation. He is the Lord of the three worlds who fulfills the wishes of His devotees.

The final verse beautifully summarizes His universal nature — He is the child, the youth, the aged, the serene, the fierce, the ascetic, and the Lord of Gauri. He is everything and beyond everything. Thus, the devotee bows to Shiva as the ultimate truth.
