Meaning

The “Apath Unmoolana Sri Durga Stotram” is a sacred hymn dedicated to Goddess Durga, composed for the complete destruction of all dangers, misfortunes and adversities. Each verse recalls a different divine episode where the Mother Goddess protected the universe by eliminating terrible demons and restoring harmony. Every verse ends with the powerful prayer: “I surrender to Durga, She who uproots every danger.”

The first verse remembers how Durga awakened Vishnu from cosmic sleep and destroyed the demons Madhu and Kaitabha who rose from his earwax to disturb creation. She instantly removed that cosmic threat, prompting Brahma to praise her.

The second verse recalls Mahishasura’s conquest of the heavens. Even after defeating the gods and usurping Indra’s throne, Mahishasura was subdued and slain by Durga. She restored order and re-established the dignity of the gods.

The third verse praises the Mother as the force behind creation, preservation and dissolution. In times of universal crisis, she appears out of compassion. The gods bow before her, seeking protection from dangers that no one else can face.

The fourth verse describes the destruction of Shumbha, Nishumbha, Dhumralochana, Chanda, Munda and the fearsome Raktabeeja. In the form of Chamunda, Durga crushed their arrogance and ended their tyranny.

The fifth verse recounts how the combined powers of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Narayana and others entered Durga to defeat the demon brothers. Uniting all energies, she slew Nishumbha first and then struck down Shumbha on the battlefield.

The sixth verse speaks of her many later incarnations — Nandajeti, Bhramari, Arunakhya, Durgama, Bhima, Shakambhari and Raktadanti — each born to rescue the worlds from new dangers. Every form of the Mother arises solely for the protection of beings.

The seventh verse meditates on Durga as the embodiment of the three gunas, appearing in countless incarnations for the protection of all three worlds. She burns down the forests of demonic forces and grants dharma, artha, kama and moksha to her devotees.

The eighth verse visualizes the Goddess in her beautiful yet powerful form — three-eyed, lion-mounted, shining with conch, discus and sword. She is tender to devotees, fierce to enemies, adored in all worlds.

The ninth verse declares that the whole creation turns to her for refuge. Just as children naturally run to their mother, all beings seek Durga’s protection without hesitation. Her compassionate glance delights even the gods.

The concluding verse assures that reciting this stotram removes every form of danger. It burns away the network of calamities like fire burns dry grass. It destroys inner delusion, fulfills wishes and grants powerful protection in all aspects of life.
