Meaning

This profound hymn, composed by Yudhishthira in the Aranya Parva of the Mahabharata, glorifies Surya as the supreme witness, the eye of the universe, and the inner self of all beings. Surya is the origin of all living creatures, the purifier of all actions, and the ultimate refuge for yogis and seekers of liberation. His radiance sustains the worlds, illumines them, purifies them, and protects them without limitation.

Vedic scholars and sages worship Surya at the ordained times, recognizing him as the deity who grants spiritual merit and divine insight. Celestial beings—including Siddhas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Nagas, and the 33 crore gods—follow his chariot seeking blessings. Even Brahma, Indra, Vishnu and Rudra revere him.

No form in the universe rivals the brilliance of Surya. All lights shine within him; he is the lord of all luminaries. Truth, purity, sattva, and righteousness abide in him. His radiance empowers Vishvakarma’s cosmic wheel and strengthens the arrows of Rama in destroying evil.

Surya governs the cycles of seasons—absorbing moisture in summer and releasing it as life-giving rains. His rays create thunder, lightning, clouds, and rainfall, sustaining biodiversity. Neither fire nor clothing protects the world as much as the warmth of Surya’s rays. He illuminates the earth and enables the functioning of all three worlds.

Without Surya’s sunrise, the world would fall into darkness, and no dharma, artha, or kama could proceed. All rituals, sacrifices, austerities, and sacred duties are blessed by him. He is the beginning and end of the cosmic day measured as a thousand yugas. He is the lord of all manvantaras, beings, and ages.

At dissolution, Surya’s wrath manifests as Samvartaka fire which dissolves the three worlds. His rays create clouds, control the oceans, and dry up creation at the appointed time. He manifests as the twelve Adityas to regulate time.

Surya is Indra, Rudra, Vishnu, Agni, Brahma—he is all forms of divinity. He is Hamsa, Savita, Bhanu, Mitra, Dharma and many other divine manifestations. Those who worship him on Shashti or Saptami with steady devotion are blessed by Lakshmi. Devotees who worship him without ego attain protection from diseases, poverty, sorrow, and karmic afflictions, gaining long life and bliss.

Yudhishthira finally prays to Surya as the giver of food, shelter, protection from storms, and as the lord of all natural forces, seeking his grace for sustaining life itself.

Benefits:
    •    Removes diseases, poverty, sorrow, and karmic suffering
    •    Grants divine strength, health, longevity, and prosperity
    •    Enhances clarity, wisdom, dharma, and inner purity
    •    Protects from misfortune, negative energies, and adversities
    •    Bestows success, vitality, abundance, and spiritual elevation
