Meaning
The “Sri Surya Nama Varnana Stotram,” revealed by Brahma in the Bhavishya Purana, is a sacred hymn listing the divine names of Surya — each name representing a unique cosmic power, form, and blessing. Brahma explains that these names are those by which the Sun God is most pleased, and which grant immense merit when recited with devotion.
The hymn praises the Sun as the eternal one, the radiant Ravi, Bhaskara, Martanda, Vivasvan, Aditya, the garlanded Lord of rays, the illuminator of day, the fire of the universe, the friend of all beings, the protector of the directions, the sustainer and creator.
He is described as Dhata, Vidhata, Aryaman, Varuna, Pushan, Bhaga, Parjanya, Tapana, the Lord with green horses, the master of all worlds, the embodiment of Vishnu, Brahma, and Rudra, the ruler of the seven worlds, and the lord of the seven horses of his chariot.
He is the master of light, life, prana, and time. His twelve forms (Dvādaśa mūrti) are invoked, along with his roles as destroyer of suffering, giver of prosperity, remover of darkness, and fulfiller of all desires.
Brahma concludes by promising that whoever recites these sacred names morning and evening, with purity and focus, obtains all desires — wealth, health, protection, success, dharma, and freedom from disease and bondage. Even great sins are destroyed by the recitation of these divine names alone.
