Meaning

One hundred and eight names of Surya, used for archana. It does not begin with Surya at all — the first name is Om Arunaaya Namah, Aruna, the red that comes before the disc clears the horizon. From there the list runs through the god as refuge, as ocean of compassion, as the one whose strength has no equal, and keeps going: light, healer, witness, timekeeper, the eye of the world.

Significance

Of the nine grahas, Surya is the one you can actually see every morning, and the worship reflects that — this namavali belongs to sunrise, not to a shrine in the dark. It is recited for Surya-related affliction in a chart, but far more often for the plain things the tradition associates with the Sun: eyesight, skin, bone strength, steadiness of the father, and the confidence to stand in front of people. Tradition holds that naming Surya 108 times at dawn, water in hand, clears the sluggishness of the body and the fog of the mind. The namavali itself makes no promise of wealth or cure; the phala talk around it comes from later ritual manuals, and it is worth keeping the two apart.

How and when to chant

Sunday is the day, and sunrise the hour. The common form is to stand facing east after a bath, pour arghya from a copper vessel in a thin stream so the light breaks through the falling water, then sit and do the archana — one red flower or a pinch of akshate at each name. Red hibiscus, red sandal paste and jaggery are the usual offerings. The one day it is done at full scale in Karnataka is Ratha Saptami, in Magha, when people bathe at dawn with arka (ekka) leaves placed on the head and shoulders and chant Surya's names before the sun is high. Some households keep the namavali for every Sunday, others attach it to a Surya Namaskara count.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the namavali begin with Aruna and not Surya?
Aruna is the red of first light, and in the Puranas also the name of Surya's charioteer, the elder brother of Garuda. Starting there follows the order of an actual sunrise: the sky reddens before the disc appears. The later names — Bhaskara, Savitr, Martanda, Divakara — bring the fully risen sun.
Which day should I recite the Surya Ashtottara?
Sunday, at or just after sunrise. Ratha Saptami in the month of Magha is the year's principal Surya day and the namavali is recited then in many Karnataka households, alongside the arka-leaf bath. Sankranti and the two solstice-linked transits are also common occasions. Daily recitation at dawn is a recognised habit and needs no special day.
Is offering arghya necessary?
Not for the namavali itself, but the two go together in practice. Arghya is water poured from a raised vessel while facing the sun, usually three times, with the Gayatri or a Surya mantra. Doing it first and then the 108 names is the standard sequence. If you cannot see the sun, offer the water facing east and continue.
What is the arka leaf custom on Ratha Saptami?
On Ratha Saptami morning people place leaves of the arka plant — ekka in Kannada, the same plant whose flowers go to Shiva — on the head and shoulders while bathing, then offer arghya to the rising sun. The number of leaves varies by family, seven being common. It is one of the few remaining household Surya rites in Karnataka.
Can women recite the Surya Ashtottara Shatanamavali?
Yes. A namavali is open worship, not a mantra requiring initiation, and there is no restriction on who may say the names. Women perform Surya archana at home routinely, and on Ratha Saptami the arka-leaf bath is done by the whole household. No priest and no special qualification is needed.
What should be offered at each name?
A red flower is the classic choice — red hibiscus above all — or akshate, rice mixed with turmeric, if flowers are short. Red sandal paste, jaggery and wheat are the usual naivedya. Keep 108 flowers or a small heap of akshate ready before starting so the reading is not interrupted midway.
How is this different from the Aditya Hridayam?
Aditya Hridayam is a stotra from the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana, taught by Agastya to Rama before the final fight with Ravana, read straight through as continuous verse. This namavali is a list of 108 names for archana, said one at a time with an offering. Many people do both — the stotra for reading, the namavali for worship.
