Sri Ravi Saptati Nama Stotram

This sacred hymn contains seventy secret and auspicious names of Lord Surya as revealed in the Skanda Purana. Each name expresses a unique cosmic function of the Sun. Surya is described as Hamsa, the pure soul; Bhanu, the radiant one; Sahasramsu, the thousand-rayed; and Tapana, the giver of heat and vitality. As Vikartana, Vivasvan, Vishvakarma, and Vibhavasu, he sustains creation, time, and life-energy.

He is Vishvarupa and Vishvakarta, the cosmic form and creator of all worlds. Martanda and Mihira symbolize his rising and setting cycles. Aditya, Ushnagu, Surya, Aryama, and Divakara express his nourishing and illuminating nature. As the twelve-formed (Dvadashatma) and seven-horsed (Saptahaya), he governs the zodiac and the movement of time.

Surya is the eye of the universe (Lokachakshu) and the destroyer of darkness (Tamohari). His rays are powerful and purifying—Gabhastihasta, Tarani, Sumahorani—dispelling disease, lethargy, and ignorance. He is Veda-vedya, the one who can be known through the Vedas, and Bhaskara, Pushan, Vrishakapi, the nourisher and protector of all beings.

As Mitra, Daityaha, Papa-harta, and Dharma-prakashaka, he supports righteousness and destroys negativity. Kalinghna, Tarkshya-vahana, and Padmaninatha are names that reveal his protective, compassionate, and benevolent aspects. Through these seventy names, Surya is worshipped as the embodiment of light, health, cosmic law, spiritual wisdom, and supreme purity.
