Meaning

One hundred and eight names of Kuja — Mangala, Angaraka, the red planet. The first name says where he comes from: Om Maheesutaaya Namah, son of Mahi, the earth. Almost every one of his names circles that origin or his colour. Bhumiputra and Bhauma, earth-born. Angaraka, the burning coal. Lohitanga, the red-limbed. Kuja itself means one born of the ground.

Significance

Kuja is the graha of heat and edge: blood, muscle, courage, quarrel, land and property, brothers, accidents, surgery. He is not a malefic to be feared so much as a force that needs somewhere to go. That is why his worship is a subject of real anxiety in Kannada households in one particular context — kuja dosha in marriage matching, where Mangala in certain houses of the chart is taken to threaten the marriage, and families compare two horoscopes for it before anything else. The namavali is recited for that, and for the plainer things: a court case over land, an operation coming up, a temper the person cannot control, a run of injuries. Tradition holds that naming Mangala 108 times in red turns his heat to purpose rather than damage. Note that the same word mangala also means auspicious, and the tradition of calling the planet by it is itself a way of asking his heat to do good.

How and when to chant

Tuesday — Mangalavara — in the morning, everything in red: red flowers, red sandal paste, red cloth, and toor dal, which is Mangala's grain in the navadhanya set. Red coral is his stone where jewellery is involved. The one day of the year the worship becomes crowded is Angaraka Chaturthi, the Sankashti Chaturthi that falls on a Tuesday, when Ganapati and Mangala are worshipped together and the fast is kept until moonrise. Say each name, place a red flower or akshate, and finish with a lamp. People with a running Kuja dasha or a marriage matching in hand often keep it for a fixed number of consecutive Tuesdays rather than doing it once.
