Meaning

Ketu Ashtottara Shatanamavali gives the 108 names of Ketu, ninth and last in the navagraha list. It opens Om Ketave Namah, Om Sthulashirase Namah, Om Dhvajakrutaye Namah. That third name is the one to hold on to: dhvaja is a banner and akriti is form, so Ketu is being called the one shaped like a flag. He is the southern lunar node, a chaya graha with no body of his own.

Significance

The word ketu is older than the graha. In early Sanskrit it means a banner, a bright sign, a comet, anything that appears in the sky and is read as a mark. Dhvajakruti keeps that older sense alive inside the namavali, which is why the flag turns up in his iconography and on temple banners rather than as a later decoration. The Puranic half of the story is the other one: when Vishnu severed Svarbhanu after he drank the amrita, the head became Rahu and the trunk became Ketu, so the two are halves of one asura and sit permanently opposite each other in the chart, one hundred and eighty degrees apart. Jyotisha then reads Ketu as moksha karaka, the graha of detachment, of endings, of what a person is finished with rather than what they are chasing. That last reading belongs to jyotisha, not to the Puranas, and it is worth keeping the two apart. In the Vimshottari scheme Ketu holds Ashwini, Magha and Mula, and his dasha runs seven years. Tradition holds that Ketu is approached calmly. The names do not ask him to go away; they name him for what he is.

How and when to chant

Ketu is almost always recited with Rahu, and the reason is that the two nodes are a single axis, so parihara for one alone is considered incomplete. Tuesday is the common day, and rahu kala on the chosen day is the usual window. Light a lamp, keep a coconut, dark cloth and dark flowers. Where families follow the navagraha grain correspondences, horse gram, huruli in Kannada, is the grain given to Ketu. Some temples take a small flag or dhvaja as the offering, following the meaning of his name. For those who travel for navagraha parihara, Keezhperumpallam in Tamil Nadu is the Ketu sthala and is normally visited on the same trip as Thirunageswaram for Rahu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Ketu in the navagraha?
Ketu is the southern lunar node, the ninth and last of the navagraha and one of the two chaya grahas. He has no physical body. In the Puranic account he is the trunk of the asura Svarbhanu, left behind when Vishnu severed the head that became Rahu after the amrita had already been drunk.
What does Dhvajakruti mean and why is Ketu shown as a banner?
Dhvaja is a banner and akriti is form, so Dhvajakruti means the one shaped like a flag. The word ketu itself meant banner, bright sign or comet in older Sanskrit, long before it named a graha. The flag in his iconography comes from the name, not the other way round.
When should the Ketu namavali be recited?
Tuesday is the common day, and rahu kala on that day is the usual window since Rahu and Ketu are worked together. Check the day panchanga, because rahu kala shifts hour by weekday. Some households keep it on eclipse days as well, when both nodes are in view.
Should Rahu and Ketu be recited together?
Usually yes. They are the two ends of one axis and are always exactly opposite each other in a chart, so tradition treats parihara for one alone as incomplete. Temple parihara is done for the pair too. Reciting the Rahu namavali and then the Ketu namavali in one sitting is the ordinary practice.
Which nakshatras belong to Ketu and how long is his dasha?
In the Vimshottari scheme Ketu holds Ashwini, Magha and Mula, and the Ketu mahadasha runs seven years, the shortest of the nine. People often take up this namavali when a Ketu dasha or bhukti is running. What that period means for your chart is a jyotishi question, not a stotra one.
What is offered to Ketu?
A lamp, a coconut, dark cloth and dark flowers are the common set. Where families follow navagraha grain correspondences, horse gram, huruli in Kannada, is Ketu's grain. Some temples accept a small flag as an offering, following the meaning of his name. The lamp and the 108 names are the part that is never skipped.
Is Ketu an inauspicious graha?
Tradition is more careful than that. Jyotisha calls Ketu moksha karaka, the graha of detachment and of things coming to an end, which is uncomfortable rather than simply bad. The namavali does not ask him to leave; it names him. Treating any graha as an enemy is not how the navagraha texts approach them.
Can the Ketu namavali be recited at home without a priest?
Yes. It is a list of names framed with Om and namah, so no initiation is needed and anyone in the household can recite it. A purohit is called for a navagraha homa or a temple archana with sankalpa in the family name. For daily or weekly recitation at home, a lamp and the names are enough.
