Meaning
Sri Hari Namamala Stotram is a garland of divine names—each name a jewel, each jewel a refuge. This hymn strings together the names of Vishnu in His countless forms, incarnations, and cosmic functions, allowing the devotee to immerse continuously in the nectar of Namasmarana.
The first verse glorifies Krishna as Govinda, Gokulananda, Gopala, and the lifter of Govardhana—protector and beloved of Gokula. The second verse praises Narayana, Nirakara, Narasimha, and the destroyer of demons—revealing His formless and fierce yet compassionate aspects.
The third verse describes the lotus-naveled, lotus-eyed Vishnu clad in yellow silk—pure, supreme bliss, and the highest Lord. The fourth verse celebrates Rama, the destroyer of Ravana, consort of Sita, lotus-eyed hero of the Raghu dynasty.
The fifth verse mentions Vamana, Visvarupa, Vitthala, Vyasadeva—showing God’s manifestation through avatāras and sage-forms. The sixth glorifies Damodara, Divine Lion (Narasimha), the compassionate protector and the son of Devaki.
The seventh describes Madhava, Matsya, Mukunda, and Madhusudana—the Lord of power, protection, and cosmic balance. The eighth extols Keshava, Krishna, Kamalakanta, and the destroyer of Kauravas.
Subsequent verses praise the Lord as the sustainer of the worlds, the remover of ignorance, Jagannatha, the four-armed Chidananda, the slayer of wrestlers, the ornament of Lakshmi, the consort of Sri, the beloved of Yamuna, and the ever-pure Salagrama.
The hymn continues to portray Him as Trivikrama, Tapomurti, Tirtha-raja, the eternal Adipurusha, the blissful Supreme, the bearer of the world’s burden, Lakshmana’s beloved, and Hanuman’s dear Lord.
The concluding verse says this garland of Hari’s names, taught by King Bali, is purifying, sin-destroying, and should be worn around the neck—meaning: carry these names in your heart always.
