Sri Hari Nama Ashtakam

Sri Hari Namashtakam is a sweet compilation of the divine names of Lord Hari, inviting the devotee to let the tongue constantly repeat these nectarine syllables. Each verse is filled with the glories of Vishnu and His incarnations, affirming that remembrance of His names purifies, protects, and elevates the soul.

The first verse highlights the names Keshava, Achyuta, Mukunda, Govinda, Madhava, Janardana—each representing the Lord’s beauty, compassion, and cosmic roles. The devotee is told: “O tongue, always chant these sweet names!”

The second verse addresses the Lord as the destroyer of demons, the protector of the worlds, and the one who dwells in the cosmic ocean—Madhusudana, Damodara, Sarngapani. His divine form sustains all creation.

The third verse speaks of the lotus-eyed Padmanabha, the wielder of the mace, and the resplendent Pitaambara-clad Vishnu whose incarnations bring auspiciousness to the world.

The fourth verse praises Him as the bearer of Kaustubha, the dharma-bridge, the Lord of Vaikuntha, Trivikrama, the upliftment of the universe.

The fifth verse glorifies Narasimha, the destroyer of Narakasura, consort of Lakshmi, the one resting on Shesha, crowned beautifully and ever protective.

The sixth verse proclaims Him as marked with Srivatsa, wielder of the conch, the ocean-sporting Lord, Yajneshwara and Yajna Himself.

The seventh verse celebrates Sri Rama—slayer of Ravana, jewel of the Raghu dynasty, consort of Sita, ally of Sugriva, the bow-bearing hero.

The eighth verse praises Sri Krishna—the darling of Vrishni and Yadava clans, lifter of Govardhana, destroyer of Kamsa, the enchanting cowherd and friend of the Pandavas.

The final verse (phalashruti) declares:
One who recites this ashtakam daily with unwavering devotion attains the supreme abode of Vishnu and is never again born into this world—never again to taste the milk of a mother’s breast.
