Sri Devaraja Ashtakam

Sri Devaraja Ashtakam is a deeply devotional hymn composed by Sri Kanchi Purna, praising Lord Varadaraja of Kanchipuram as the supreme refuge and ocean of compassion. The stotram begins by honoring Kanchi Purna, who is celebrated as a beloved devotee of the Lord, and then turns to Varadaraja—the lotus-eyed protector who removes the distress of all who surrender to Him. The devotee prostrates before the Lord seated on Hastigiri, asking for His divine shelter and grace.

The hymn describes the Lord as the compassionate savior of all living beings and prays that His merciful glances fall upon the devotee. It confesses human weaknesses—wrong actions, confusion about right and wrong, attraction to worldly pleasures, attachment to family, possessions, status, and the endless thirst of samsara. Life is portrayed as a frightening desert full of diseases, dangers, temptations, and exhaustion. The devotee, weak, troubled, and wandering helplessly, pleads for Varadaraja’s kindness to uplift him from suffering.

The final verses are a moving cry for divine grace. The devotee asks the Lord to shower him with cool waves of nectar-like compassion, soothing all pain and restoring peace. Varadaraja’s glance is depicted as the ultimate cure for sorrow, removing karmic suffering and granting spiritual clarity, hope, and inner strength. The stotram ends as a complete act of surrender where the devotee rests entirely at the Lord’s lotus feet.
