Meaning
The Sri Damodara Stotram is a deeply devotional hymn composed by the sage Satyavrata, a renunciate from the Sindhu region who abandoned all worldly ties and dedicated his life to the worship of Sri Krishna in Vrindavan. During the holy month of Kartika, with a pure mind and simple living, he worshipped Lord Damodara with great devotion and offered this heartfelt stotram.
The hymn begins by glorifying the charming Damodara form of Krishna—running in fear as Mother Yashoda chases Him, His shining earrings swinging as He runs through Gokula, and finally being caught and tied to the mortar. His crying face, rubbing His eyes with lotus-like hands, trembling throat, and soft childlike expressions melt the devotee’s heart.
The sage declares that he desires no boon—not even liberation—but only the constant vision of Gopala’s sweet child form in his heart. The verses lovingly describe Krishna’s lotus face framed by dark curls, His reddish lips repeatedly kissed by the gopis. The devotee then prays to Lord Damodara, the infinite Vishnu, to rescue him from the ocean of suffering and accept him with compassion.
He recalls how Krishna liberated Kubera’s sons and transformed them into true devotees, asking for the same gift of pure love. Finally, the stotram offers obeisances to the shining rope around Krishna’s waist, His divine form, Radha Devi, and His endless pastimes. In the end, Sage Narada remarks that hearing this hymn filled Damodara’s heart with instantaneous joy, showing how dear this prayer is to the Lord.
