Meaning

One hundred and eight names of Chandra, the Moon among the nine grahas. It opens Om Shreemate Namah and then, in the second name, Om Shashadharaaya Namah — he who carries the hare, the shape people have seen in the moon's markings for as long as the language has existed. The list runs on through the Moon as cool-rayed, as the lord of night, as the vessel of amrita, as Rohini's beloved.

Significance

Chandra is the graha of the mind. The Purusha Sukta puts it directly — chandrama manaso jaatah, the moon was born from the mind — and every later handbook reads the Moon in a chart as a reading of temperament: sleep, memory, the settledness of a mother, the ability to be calm. So the archana gets done for reasons that are rarely dramatic. A child who does not sleep. A stretch of restlessness with no clear cause. A weak or afflicted Chandra in the jataka, or a Chandra dasha that has just begun. Tradition holds that naming the Moon 108 times cools the mind in the literal sense the names keep using — sheetamshu, cool-rayed. The deeper association is with Shiva, who took Chandra onto his matted hair when Daksha's curse was wasting him away.

How and when to chant

Monday, in the evening rather than at dawn — the Moon's hour. Everything offered is white: jasmine, white lotus if you have one, white cloth, unbroken rice, and milk. A milk abhisheka before the archana is common where there is a Shiva linga at home, since Monday belongs to Shiva and Chandra sits on his head. Payasa made with rice and milk is the usual naivedya. Purnima is the year's recurring high point and Somavati Amavasya — an Amavasya falling on a Monday — is the rarer one. Say each name and place a white flower or a grain of akshate; ten minutes, unhurried.

Why is Chandra called Shashadhara?
Shasha is a hare and dhara means one who bears. The dark markings on the moon's face were read in India as the shape of a hare, and in China and Japan as a rabbit. The name appears early in the namavali and sets its tone: this list describes the visible moon before it describes the graha.

Can I recite Chandra names on days other than Monday?
Yes. Daily evening recitation is perfectly acceptable and some households do the full namavali only on Purnima and a short prayer the rest of the month. There is no prohibition attached to any day. Monday simply concentrates the practice and makes it easier to keep up.
