Sri Aditya Stavam

In this sacred hymn from the Markandeya Purana, Brahma extols Surya as the supreme cause of creation, the cosmic light, the essence of the Vedas, the form of yajna, and the visible manifestation of the Absolute (Parabrahman).

Brahma begins by declaring that everything in the universe is pervaded by the Sun. Surya is the universal form, the supreme radiance meditated upon by yogis. He is described as the very embodiment of the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas—their origin, their sound, and their spiritual meaning. His power is both unimaginable and infinite.

Brahma acknowledges that although he appears to create the universe, the true creative force is Surya. Through the Sun’s energy arise fire, wind, earth, and water; from His power come cycles of birth, sustenance, and dissolution. Surya pervades the five elements and protects the cosmos in multifold ways.

Vedic scholars worship Surya as Vishnu in the form of yajna, while seekers and ascetics meditate upon Him as the supreme liberating Self. Surya is the deity, the sacrifice, and the Parabrahman—three divine aspects united.

Brahma then humbly requests the Sun to withdraw a portion of His tremendous radiance so that the work of creation may proceed. Surya responds with compassion and softens His blazing light. With the world now bearable, Brahma resumes creation—gods, demons, humans, animals, plants, and even beings of hell—just as in previous cycles.

Thus, this hymn establishes Surya as the heart of creation, the soul within all beings, the source of Vedic wisdom, the purifier of karma, and the supreme divine intelligence that upholds cosmic order.
