A hundred and eight names of the Lord of Tirumala, arranged for archane. The list opens om venkateshaya namah, om shrinivasaya namah, om lakshmipataye namah, om anamayaya namah, and closes om jagadishvaraya namah. Saturday is his day. Kannada families who call him Timmappa recite this at home through Shravana, on Vaikuntha Ekadashi, and whenever a Tirumala vow is pending or has been kept.

Significance

The second name explains the first. Venkatesha is the Lord of the Venkata hill; Shrinivasa is the one in whom Shri dwells. Read together they say the whole thing: this is Vishnu located at a particular rock in the Seshachalam range, with Lakshmi on his chest. The list keeps returning to that pairing, and Anamaya, the fourth name, meaning the one without disease or defect, is the reason so many families recite it when someone at home is ill.

Tirumala is unusual among Vaishnava kshetras for how much of its worship is transactional in the plain sense. People come with a vow, and they come back to discharge it. Hair is given at the Kalyanakatta. A hundi stands inside the temple and a small tin hundi stands in thousands of Karnataka homes, filled through the year and emptied at Tirumala. The ashtottara belongs to that same household economy of promise and return. It is what you say on a Saturday when the trip has not been possible.

The printed namavali does not attach a phala-shruti. What tradition attaches is the substitution: archane at home with these names is accepted in place of archane at the hill when distance, money or health stand in the way.

How and when to chant

Saturday morning, after bathing, is the standard time, and Saturdays in Shravana or in the Tamil month of Purattasi carry more weight. Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Brahmotsavam days are the other big ones. Where a family has taken a vow, some keep the recitation weekly until the Tirumala trip is made.

Offer tulasi one leaf to a name. Where tulasi is scarce, use flowers. Sandal paste and turmeric-kumkuma on the picture, a lamp of ghee or sesame oil, and jaggery, banana or a simple sweet as naivedya are enough for a home archane. Curd rice and laddu appear in families who keep the Tirumala association closely.

Variation worth knowing: Telugu-speaking households in Karnataka often recite in Telugu script with the Govinda namalu before or after, while Kannada families usually pair the ashtottara with Purandaradasa's or Vyasaraya's compositions on Venkataramana. Both are correct. Say Govinda Govinda between the sections if that is your family habit; nothing in the text forbids it.
