shree shani vajrapanjara kavacham'

Shani Vajra Panjara Kavacham is a protective stotra to Shani whose title carries its own image. Vajra is the thunderbolt, panjara is a cage, so the reciter is asking to be shut inside armour as hard as the vajra. The closing line places the text in the Brahmanda Purana, spoken inside a conversation between Brahma and Narada. Kashyapa is named as the rishi, and the metre is anushtup.

Significance

The opening dhyana is worth pausing over, because it does not describe the Shani of popular fear. It gives him blue garments and a blue body, a crown, a bow in his hand, four arms, and a vulture beneath him, and then asks him to be prasanna and prashanta, pleased and calm, and to grant boons. That is the deity the rest of the verses address. The armour image follows from it. A cage of vajra is not a weapon; it is something you stand inside. The closing verses are where this kavacha is unlike the Padma Purana one. They name Shani specifically in the eighth position, the twelfth, the second, and in the janma lagna, and say the kavacha destroys the dosha of those placements. Jyotisha readers will recognise them at once: the eighth is ashtama Shani, and the twelfth, first and second together are the seven and a half year span called sade-sati. So the text is not vaguely protective. It states which configurations it is answering. That is a claim the stotra makes about itself, and it is not a forecast about any particular chart.

How and when to chant

Saturday morning after bathing, with a sesame-oil lamp. Where a family is in the middle of a Shani transit that concerns them, daily recitation is common and then it settles back to Saturdays. Do the nyasa first if you have been taught it; if not, recite the kavacha as it is, which is what most households do. Kavachas in general are also taken up before setting out on something difficult, and this one is used that way, read once before a journey or a decision. Offerings are the usual Shani set, black sesame, urad dal, dark cloth and sesame oil, and there is no requirement beyond the lamp.
