Meaning

One hundred and eight numbered names of Gauri, opening om gauryai namah, om ganeshajananyai namah, om giriraajatanoodbhavaayai namah and closing with om shod'ashaaksharadevataayai namah. These are the names used at the Mangala Gauri vrata, kept by married women on the Tuesdays of Shravana — mangala is the Tuesday, and the vrata is named for the day it belongs to.

Significance

Sixteen is the number that runs through this worship, and the closing name says so plainly: she is called the deity of the sixteen-syllabled mantra. In the vrata that number becomes material — a lamp with sixteen wicks, sixteen betel leaves, sixteen fruits, sixteen kinds of flower and leaf, sixteen of the sweet that the family makes. The vrata is kept for the first five years of a marriage and closed with an udyapana in the fifth, and in the first year a bride usually keeps it at her mother's house. What it asks for is stated without euphemism: the long life of the husband and the continuance of the line. The night is the other half of it. Women gather after the puja and stay awake together, playing the old circle games, and that wakefulness is counted as part of the vrata rather than as something added to it.

How and when to chant

Tuesday morning in Shravana, after a bath, in a clean corner set aside for the day. Install Gauri — a small metal image, or an annapurna murti, or the turmeric one some families make. Say the hundred and eight names offering kumkuma or flowers at each, keeping the sixteens in view, and offer the sweet the household keeps for her. Invite married women in the evening for haldi-kumkuma and give them the vayana. The vrata is strongest in Maharashtrian households and across north Karnataka — Belagavi, Dharwad, Vijayapura — while further south the bigger Gauri observance is Swarna Gauri on Bhadrapada Tritiya.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who keeps the Mangala Gauri vrata and for how long?
Married women, on the Tuesdays of Shravana, usually for the first five years after the wedding, closing it with an udyapana in the fifth year. In the first year the bride commonly keeps it at her mother's house. Some families continue past five years by choice rather than by rule.
Why is everything counted in sixteens?
Sixteen runs through the whole vrata — sixteen wicks in the lamp, sixteen betel leaves, sixteen fruits, sixteen sweets. The namavali closes by calling her the deity of the sixteen-syllabled mantra, so the number in the ritual and the number in the last name point at each other. Families differ on which sets of sixteen they keep.
Is Mangala Gauri the same as Swarna Gauri of Gauri Habba?
The same goddess, two different vratas. Mangala Gauri falls on Shravana Tuesdays and belongs to newly married women. Swarna Gauri is on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, the day before Ganesha Chaturthi, and is kept by married women across Karnataka. Their materials, timing and vrata katha are separate.
Is this vrata observed in Karnataka?
Yes, most strongly in north Karnataka — Belagavi, Dharwad, Vijayapura — and in Maharashtrian households anywhere in the state. In old Mysore and coastal districts it is much less common, where Swarna Gauri is the Gauri observance families keep. Say that plainly rather than assume it is universal.
What is the night vigil part of the vrata?
After the evening puja the women who have gathered stay awake together, singing and playing the old circle games through the night. The wakefulness counts as part of the vrata, not as entertainment appended to it. Households that cannot manage the full night keep a shortened vigil instead.
What is offered as naivedya?
Whatever sweet the household keeps for her, in sixteens where the family follows that count — puran poli in Maharashtrian and north Karnataka homes, laddu or kadabu elsewhere. Fruits, betel leaves and flowers are set out in the same number. Nothing exotic is required and nothing is bought that the house does not normally make.
Can the vrata be done without a priest?
Yes, and it usually is. Older women of the family guide the first year, since the sequence and the katha are carried by practice rather than by a book. A priest is called by families who want the sankalpa and the udyapana done formally in the fifth year.
