Ratha Saptami Sloka

These Ratha Saptami verses praise the sanctity of the Saptami tithi and the purifying power of Arka leaves (Arka-patra) used during the sacred bath. The devotee prays to the divine Saptami Devi—beloved of the seven horses of Surya’s chariot and the light of the seven worlds—to destroy the accumulated sins of seven births. Past karma, sorrow, delusion, and mistakes committed knowingly and unknowingly are offered for purification through the grace of this holy tithi.

The Arkapatra Snana is said to wash away deep-seated karmic stains and bring spiritual clarity and physical healing. The devotee salutes Saptami Devi, the destroyer of sins, and asks that the merit of bathing with seven Arka leaves remove all impurities. In the Arghya verse, Surya—the seven-horsed Lord and light of all seven worlds—is worshipped with water offerings, invoking radiant blessings, health, prosperity, and divine protection.

The secondary verses emphasize the destruction of sins from this birth and previous births, whether committed through thought, speech, or action. The phrase “Sapta Sapta Maha Sapta” symbolizes cosmic completeness: seven worlds, seven continents, seven energies of creation. Ratha Saptami marks Surya Jayanti, representing the Sun’s energy rising in full glory; hence the bath and prayers on this day yield immense spiritual and physical benefits.
