Nyasa Dasakam

The Nyasa Dasakam is a profound hymn by Sri Vedanta Desika that encapsulates the essence of total surrender (śaraṇāgati) to Lord Sriman Narayana. It teaches how a devotee relinquishes the burden of self-protection and entrusts everything—body, soul, life, actions—to the Lord.

The stotram begins with an invocation to Desika himself, seeking his grace. The devotee then declares: “The responsibility for protecting me and the fruits of that protection are not mine. They belong solely to the Lord.” This is the heart of surrender — letting go of one’s own effort and depending entirely on the Lord.

The devotee, empty of ego and worldly pride, places his complete self in the Lord’s care with trust and prayer. The Lord, who accepts the devotee as His own, takes up the burden of protection and guides him as the true Master.

He pleads: “O Lord, I am Yours. At the end of this life, take me to Your lotus feet.”
The devotee seeks only one thing — unwavering servitude and eternal union with the Lord.

He asks to be kept free from prohibited and selfish desires, and to be engaged always in faultless service. He offers his entire being — body, mind, senses, possessions, animate and inanimate — as tools for divine service.

He prays for removal of sinful tendencies and forgiveness for past wrongs.
Finally, he acknowledges that the Lord Himself has already taken possession of the burden of his protection; therefore he now lives fearless, relieved, and fully dependent on divine grace.

The concluding verse beautifully affirms that once surrender is made, no other means are required — the Lord’s infinite compassion becomes the sole refuge.
