Surya Stuti

This Surya Stuti from the Markandeya Purana praises the Sun as the embodiment of pure light, consciousness, and cosmic order. He is saluted as the one whose radiance forms the basis of day and night, who sustains the entire universe through his rays, and who destroys ignorance and darkness.

All moving and unmoving beings—humans, devas, animals, birds, serpents—exist and flourish only through his energy. Water becomes purified by his touch; dharma, yajña, charity, and sacred acts derive their merit through his presence.

The Sun is described as the supreme abode of knowledge, the remover of ignorance, and the purest of the pure. He is also identified with the Vedas themselves: the Rig, Yajur, and Sama are his inherent forms. Thus, he is the very essence of sacred wisdom and spiritual revelation.

He exists both in manifest and unmanifest forms, subtle and gross, pervading time itself—from moments to hours. The universe remains in harmonic motion only through his rays. The hymn urges that this sacred stuti should be heard or recited with full devotion, discipline, and under the guidance of a guru for its highest results.
