Meaning

In this sacred narration from the Bhagavata Purana, Sage Shuka describes Mount Trikuta, a heavenly region surrounded by celestial forests, divine trees, fragrant winds, crystal-clear waters, and lakes filled with golden lotuses. Gods, Gandharvas, Vidyadharas, Kinnaras, and Apsaras frequently roam there, making the whole area vibrant with divine beauty.

In this paradise roamed Gajendra, the mighty king of elephants, whose very scent frightened lions, tigers, serpents, and wild beasts. One hot day, thirsty and exhausted, he approached a splendid lake with his herd. Entering the cool water brought him immense relief, and he refreshed himself joyfully.

But suddenly, a fierce crocodile living in the lake seized his leg. A battle between two giants began — the elephant strong on land, the crocodile strong in water. Their struggle continued for a thousand years, as described in the text. Gajendra slowly lost his strength, while the crocodile gained more power in its natural habitat.

His herd could do nothing but cry helplessly. At the brink of death, completely exhausted and realizing worldly strength cannot save him, Gajendra awakened divine remembrance from his past spiritual merit. With total surrender, fear, and devotion, he prayed from the depths of his heart:

“I cannot save myself. No creature can save me. Only the Supreme Lord can rescue me from this noose of death.”

Moved by his pure surrender and devotion, Lord Vishnu instantly mounted Garuda and rushed to his devotee. Cutting the crocodile with His Sudarshana Chakra, He liberated Gajendra from both physical and karmic bondage and granted him moksha. This narrative stands as one of the greatest examples of unconditional surrender and divine grace.

Benefits:
• Protection from fear, danger, enemies, and misfortunes
• Strengthens surrender, faith, and inner spiritual resilience
• Grants peace of mind, divine protection, and removal of karma
• Inspires devotion and deepens connection with God
