Meaning
The “Sri Surya Stuti” composed by Lord Brahma glorifies the Sun as the Adideva—the first among gods—and the supreme source of creation, preservation, dissolution, and cosmic order. Brahma praises the Sun as the life-force of all beings: gods, gandharvas, rakshasas, sages, siddhas, serpents, birds, and humans.
The hymn states that the Sun is simultaneously Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Prajapati, Vayu, Indra, Soma, and Varuna, representing all divine powers through his radiant form. He is time itself, the creator, sustainer, and destroyer of the universe. Rivers, oceans, mountains, thunder, lightning—everything arises and dissolves through him. He is the eternal, manifest and unmanifest, the source of knowledge, and the supreme beyond even Shiva.
His thousand rays represent his all-pervading presence, with countless faces, eyes, and feet that illuminate all realms. His form is too radiant for even the gods to behold. The Sun is the object of praise for sages like Bhrigu, Atri, Pulaha, and others. He is the embodiment of all knowledge, the support of the Vedas, the basis of yajña, and the supreme paramātma.
The final verses extol him as the destroyer of sins, diseases, and poverty, and the giver of all boons, wealth, joy, and intelligence. Brahma proclaims that worship of such a supreme Sun brings all forms of prosperity and spiritual upliftment.
