Meaning
The Bhagavat Stuti is Bhishma’s final, heartfelt hymn to Lord Krishna, recited while lying on the bed of arrows at the end of the Mahabharata war. In these verses, Bhishma’s entire consciousness rests upon Krishna’s divine form, compassion, heroism, and supreme nature.
He praises Krishna as the one who removes all delusion and who guides the flow of life through His divine will. Bhishma meditates on Krishna’s tamala-blue form, sun-like garments, lotus face framed by beautiful curls, and ever-charming smile.
He remembers the battlefield scenes: Krishna covered in dust, sweat, and blood—yet appearing divinely resplendent. Bhishma recounts how Krishna protected Arjuna by placing His chariot between the opposing armies, and how He dispelled Arjuna’s confusion through the wisdom of the Gita.
The most powerful memory is when Krishna broke His own vow, jumped from the chariot, lifted a wheel as a makeshift weapon, and charged toward Bhishma to protect dharma—His compassion overshadowing His own rules. Bhishma bows to this unparalleled gesture of divine love.
He recalls Krishna’s protection of the righteous, His destruction of evil forces, and how even warriors slain in His presence attained divine liberation. Bhishma also remembers the sweetness of Krishna as the beloved of the Gopikas—His gentle gait, smiles, and loving glances.
At Yudhishthira’s Rajasuya, although sages, kings, and gods were present, Krishna alone was worthy of the highest honor. Ultimately, Bhishma declares that Krishna is like the one sun reflected in many hearts—seemingly many forms but truly one Supreme Being. This realization dissolves all delusion and duality.
