Meaning

In the battlefield, when Rama becomes exhausted and emotionally burdened while facing Ravana, the gods gather to witness the war. Sage Agastya approaches Rama and reveals the secret, eternal teaching—the Aditya Hridayam, the Heart of the Sun—which grants victory in all battles of life.

Agastya tells Rama that worshipping the inner essence of Surya, the supreme light, destroys all enemies, removes sorrow, grants peace, purifies sins, increases life span, and leads to assured triumph. Surya is described as the embodiment of all gods—Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Indra, Yama, Kubera, Soma, Varuna—and as the Cosmic Eye witnessing all worlds.

The hymn praises Surya as the creator, sustainer, and destroyer. His rays govern the movement of planets, the seasons, day and night, and all forms of life.
