Meaning

One hundred and eight names of Lakshmi, said one at a time with a pinch of kumkuma or a flower offered at each. The list does not open with a title of wealth. It opens with Om Prakrityai Namah, Om Vikrityai Namah, Om Vidyaayai Namah — nature, nature's change, and knowledge. In Karnataka it is used on Fridays, at the Varamahalakshmi vrata in Shravana, and at the Deepavali Lakshmi puja.

Significance

Read the names in order and the picture that forms is wider than money. Shraddha, faith. Buddhi, intelligence. Anagha, the faultless one. Dharmanilaya, the one in whom dharma rests. Svaha and Svadha — she is the very utterance by which an offering reaches the gods and the ancestors, which is to say nothing given reaches anyone without her. Kshirodasambhava keeps the churning of the milk-ocean in view, and the string of Padma names — Padmapriya, Padmahasta, Padmakshi, Padmasundari — fixes the lotus as her seat, her hand, her eye. Tradition holds that archana with these names steadies a household's sustenance rather than making it suddenly rich, and the names themselves support that reading: what is asked for is order, not a windfall.

How and when to chant

Friday evening, after the lamp is lit, is the usual time; Friday morning after a bath does as well. Seat a kalasha with a coconut, or the silver face of the goddess many Karnataka families keep for the vrata, and say the names one by one, offering kumkuma at each — kumkumarchane is how women here have always done it. Red or pink flowers, and lotus when the season gives it. Those who count use a lotus-seed mala. The Varamahalakshmi vrata falls on the Friday before the full moon of Shravana, and the whole hundred and eight are said then before the offering of payasa and five fruits. On Deepavali amavasya evening, shops and account books get the same archana.

Same one hundred and eight names, two formats. The namavali sets each name between Om and Namah so you can offer kumkuma or a flower at every one — it is made for archana. The stotram strings the same names into metrical verses for continuous recitation. Households doing puja use the namavali; people reciting on the move usually prefer the stotram.
Why does it begin with Prakriti and Vikriti instead of a name for wealth?
Because the text treats Lakshmi as the substance of the world before it treats her as its riches. Prakriti is nature itself, Vikriti its constant changing, Vidya the knowing of it. Wealth names come later in the list. The order is a statement: prosperity is one form she takes, not the whole of her.
Which day and time should the 108 names be recited?

Does one need a mala, and how many rounds?
One round of the hundred and eight names is complete in itself and no mala is needed, since the names are counted by the offerings. Upasakas who repeat a Lakshmi mantra separately use a lotus-seed mala for that. Repeating the namavali three times on a vrata day is a family custom, not a rule.
