Meaning

A hundred and eight names of Krishna for archane. The list begins om shri krishnaya namah, om kamalanathaya namah, om vasudevaya namah, and ends om paratparaya namah. Families use it on Janmashtami night, on Ashtami tithi through the year, and at the daily pooja. In Karnataka it carries an extra weight, because Udupi has kept a Krishna in daily service since Madhvacharya's time.

Significance

The names refuse to settle on one Krishna. Vasudeva the prince stands beside Navanitachora, the butter thief; Govinda the cowherd beside Paratpara, the one beyond the beyond. That range is the point of the list. A household that says all hundred and eight in one sitting has addressed the baby in the cradle and the teacher of the Gita without changing posture, which is close to how Kannada bhakti has always held him.

Udupi sharpens this. The image in the Krishna Matha is worshipped facing west, and devotees take darshana through the small silver-framed window called Kanakana Kindi. The story told there is of Kanakadasa, a Kuruba singer kept outside the wall, for whom the Lord turned. Whether the wall cracked or the image turned is told differently by different mathas, but the window is there and the queue still forms at it. When a Kannada family recites the ashtottara on Janmashtami, that image is usually the one in mind, not a north Indian Krishna.

The printed namavali does not close with a phala-shruti promising a result. What it offers is access: the names are plain enough for a child to repeat and dense enough that an elder finds something new in Anantaya or Yashodatanaya after forty years.

How and when to chant

Janmashtami is the big night. The Kannada household does the pooja near midnight, when Krishna is held to have been born, and small footprints of rice flour are drawn from the threshold to the pooja room so the child can walk in. Chakkuli, avalakki and butter go on the plate. Ashtami tithi each month, and Wednesdays in some families, carry the same archane on a smaller scale.

Method is simple. Bathe, light the lamp, keep tulasi leaves or flowers to your right, and offer one with each name. Butter is the offering most associated with him, and unlike many deities he is given avalakki, beaten rice, in memory of Kuchela. Where a family keeps the Udupi practice, the archane follows the abhisheka and precedes the naivedya.

If the household has children, let them say the first ten names aloud and hand them the plate of leaves. That is how most Kannada speakers learned the list, and it is a better method than any correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should Krishna Ashtottara be recited?
Janmashtami night is the main occasion, usually near midnight. Beyond that, the Ashtami tithi of each month suits it, and many families recite it every morning as part of the regular pooja. Rohini nakshatra days and the whole of Shravana are also common. No day is closed to it, since this is archane and not a timed vrata.
What is the Kanakana Kindi at Udupi?
A small window in the wall of the Udupi Sri Krishna Matha through which devotees take darshana. Tradition connects it to Kanakadasa, the singer who was kept outside, and holds that the Lord turned west for him. Accounts of how it happened differ between mathas, but the window and the westward image are both there today.
What should I offer during the archane?
Butter first, since almost every story about him involves it. Avalakki, beaten rice, recalls Kuchela's handful. Tulasi leaves or flowers are offered one to a name. On Janmashtami, Kannada households add chakkuli, undae and seeyaal. None of this is compulsory; a lamp and clean water offered with attention are enough.
Is Krishna Ashtottara different from Vishnu Ashtottara?
Yes, though they overlap. Krishna is Vishnu, so names like Vasudeva and Damodara appear in both lists. The Krishna namavali dwells on Brindavan, Yashoda, the flute and the Gita, while the Vishnu list spreads across all the avataras. Choose the one that matches the form you keep in the pooja room.
Can children recite it?
They should. The names are short and many of them are stories in one word, which makes them easier to learn than most stotras. Start with the first ten and add a few each week. Giving a child the plate of tulasi leaves to offer keeps the attention where reciting alone often loses it.
Does the namavali promise any specific result?
The commonly printed text ends at om paratparaya namah without a phala-shruti verse. Teachers speak of steadiness of mind and of the household worship staying alive, but the list itself makes no claim. Treat any promise you see attached to it online as someone's addition rather than part of the text.
What does Paratpara, the closing name, mean?
Beyond the beyond, or higher than the highest. It is a deliberate ending. After a hundred and seven names that describe him as a child, a cowherd, a charioteer and a king, the last one admits that the describing has not finished the job. Many Vaishnava namavalis close on that note.
Do I need a priest for Janmashtami pooja at home?
No. Most Kannada families do it themselves: bathe, clean the pooja room, draw the rice-flour footprints, recite the ashtottara near midnight, offer butter and avalakki, and do arati. A purohita is called only when the family wants a formal vrata with sankalpa or a homa alongside.
