|| Iti Shree Guru Ashtottara Shatanaamaavali Sampoornam ||

Meaning

One hundred and eight names of Brihaspati, the Guru among the grahas, opening Om Gurave Namah. He is older than the planet: in the Rigveda he appears as Brahmanaspati, lord of prayer and of the word that makes a rite work. The Puranas make him the son of Angiras and the acharya of the devas, set against Shukracharya on the other side. His names circle teaching, dharma, and the authority that comes from knowing rather than from force.

Significance

Guru is the graha of expansion and of good judgment. Jyotisha reads him for children, for learning, for dharma and for the counsel a person is able to give and to take; in traditional matching for a woman's chart he is read for the husband, and guru bala — Jupiter's strength at a given time — is checked before fixing a marriage or an upanayana. That is the practical reason the namavali is recited so widely: a marriage that will not settle, a couple hoping for a child, a student beginning serious study, an elder worried about the direction a family is drifting. Tradition holds that Brihaspati worshipped on his own day steadies discernment. In Karnataka the day itself carries a second layer — Thursday is guru day, and the bhajan halls of the Raghavendra Swamy mathas fill up on Thursday evening whether or not anyone is thinking about the planet.

How and when to chant

Thursday morning, in yellow: yellow flowers, turmeric, yellow cloth, chana dal — kadale bele — which is Guru's grain in the navadhanya, and a banana as naivedya. Yellow sapphire is his stone. Many households pour turmeric water at the foot of a banana plant on Thursday and do the archana after. Offer a flower or a grain of chana at each name and close with a lamp. People often keep it for a fixed run of Thursdays, and those in a Guru mahadasha or waiting on a marriage begin on the first Thursday after the sankalpa is made.
