Meaning

The Skanda Utpatti (Birth of Skanda) in the Bala Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana narrates the divine origin of Lord Kartikeya. The gods approached Brahma seeking a commander to destroy Tarakasura. Brahma revealed that, as foretold by Parvati, Agni would carry the divine seed and deposit it into the Ganga. Ganga, unable to withstand the fiery brilliance, released it at the foot of Mount Himavat. From that blazing energy, precious metals like gold and other minerals emerged on earth.

The divine effulgence manifested as a radiant child—Skanda. The Krittikas (six celestial mothers) nurtured the child, feeding him their milk. Through their combined nourishment he became the six-faced Shanmukha. The gods, led by Agni, bathed the child and named him Skanda, Kartikeya, and Shanmukha.

He later became the commander of the celestial army, slayer of Tarakasura, and protector of the three worlds. The narrative highlights divine cooperation, the role of Agni and Ganga as mediums of cosmic creation, and Skanda’s birth as a manifestation of supreme valor meant for the welfare of the worlds.

Summary:

Skanda was born from the combined divine energies of Shiva, Agni, and Ganga to fulfill the gods’ need for a celestial commander. Unable to contain the fiery seed, Ganga released it onto the Himalayan slopes where it manifested into the glorious child. The Krittikas nurtured him and thus he gained six faces. Named Skanda and Kartikeya, he later defeated Tarakasura. Reciting this story grants longevity, progeny, prosperity, and divine grace from Lord Subrahmanya.
