Meaning

A hundred and eight names for Sai Baba of Shirdi, opening Om Shri Sainathaya Namah, Om Lakshminarayanaya Namah. Worth saying at the start: this is a modern devotional text. Sai Baba lived into the twentieth century and died at Shirdi in 1918, so the namavali was composed for a person within living memory, not drawn from a Purana. Thursday is his day.

Significance

The second name is the tell. Lakshminarayana, a Puranic epithet, placed on a faqir who lived in a disused village mosque he called Dwarkamai and kept a fire burning in it. That is how devotion in India has always absorbed its saints: the vocabulary already at hand gets extended to a person people actually met and spoke to. Some readers find this jarring. It is better seen plainly than dressed up as antiquity.

What is actually known about him is thin, and he kept it that way. He never stated his birth, his parents or his religion. He said Sabka Malik Ek and he said Allah Malik. Hindus and Muslims came to him in his lifetime, and both kept Thursday. He gave visitors udi, ash from the dhuni, the fire he tended, and Shirdi still gives it. He asked for dakshina and gave most of it away the same day.

The main source for all of it is the Sai Satcharitra, written in Marathi in the years around his death by Govind Raghunath Dabholkar, whom Baba called Hemadpant. Fifty-three chapters, read by households as a seven-day saptaha.

One point of confusion is worth clearing. Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi was a different person of the twentieth century who stated that he was Shirdi Sai Baba returned. This namavali is for the Shirdi saint. Devotees of each are often devotees of the other, and no one needs to settle the question to recite.

How and when to chant

Thursday, and most people do it in the evening. Shirdi itself keeps four aratis through the day, Kakad at dawn, Madhyan at noon, Dhoop at dusk and Shej at night, and households that follow the practice closely time their recitation to one of them.

At home: light a lamp before his picture or padukas, keep flowers to your right and offer one at each name. Udi, if you have it from Shirdi, is applied to the forehead and a little kept in the pooja. Fruit, a simple sweet or jaggery serve as naivedya. A chapter of the Satcharitra read aloud after the archane is what most Sai households do.

The nine-Thursday vrata is commonly kept: the archane and a reading each Thursday for nine weeks, ending with feeding people, which is the part of it Baba is most associated with. If you take it up, plan the feeding first and the ritual second. That ordering is not a modern gloss; the Satcharitra is full of him pressing food on people.

No initiation, no priest, no qualification. He turned nobody away in his lifetime and the practice around him has kept that shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shirdi Sai Baba a Hindu deity?
He was a historical person who died at Shirdi in 1918, and he is venerated as a saint rather than as a Puranic deity. He never stated his religion, said Sabka Malik Ek, and had both Hindu and Muslim devotees in his lifetime. This namavali applies traditional epithets to him, which is how saints are usually absorbed.
When was this namavali composed?
It is a twentieth-century devotional composition, produced after his death, and the copies in circulation do not name an author or a date. Anyone presenting it as ancient or Puranic is mistaken. That does not affect its use; it does affect how honestly the text can be described.
Why is Thursday kept for Sai Baba?
Thursday was observed at Shirdi in his own lifetime, by Hindu and Muslim devotees alike, and the practice has stayed. Guruvara also fits how he is approached, as a guru rather than as the granter of a specific boon. The nine-Thursday vrata that many households keep follows from the same weekday.
What is udi?
Ash from the dhuni, the fire Baba kept burning at Dwarkamai and which is still maintained at Shirdi. He gave it to visitors, and it is still distributed there. Devotees apply a little to the forehead and keep some in the pooja. It is not required for the archane.
What is the Sai Satcharitra?
The main account of his life, written in Marathi around the time of his death by Govind Raghunath Dabholkar, whom Baba called Hemadpant. Fifty-three chapters. Households read it as a seven-day saptaha, often ending on a Thursday, and it is the source most of what people know about Baba comes from.
Can people of other faiths recite this?
Nothing in the practice restricts it, and the history is against restriction. Muslim devotees came to him in his lifetime, he lived in a mosque, and he used the language of both traditions. If the Sanskrit-style names sit awkwardly for you, many people simply say Om Sai Ram or read the Satcharitra instead.
Is Shirdi Sai Baba the same as Sathya Sai Baba?
They are two different people. Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, who died in 2011, stated that he was Shirdi Sai Baba returned. This namavali is for the Shirdi saint, who died in 1918. Many devotees follow both; nobody needs to settle the claim in order to recite.
What should be offered during the archane?
A lamp, flowers one at each name, and fruit or jaggery as naivedya. Udi if you have it. Beyond that, feeding someone is treated as the central offering in this tradition rather than an optional extra, and the Satcharitra returns to it again and again.
