Meaning

One hundred and eight names of Lalita Tripurasundari, opening Om Shivaayai Namah, Om Bhavaanyai Namah, Om Kalyaanyai Namah. This is the Lalita Ashtottara, not the Lalita Sahasranama — the two are constantly mistaken for each other. Both name the same goddess; this one is short enough to be used for a Friday archana at home, which is how most people meet it.

Significance

Three names in, the list has said what it is doing. Shiva in the feminine, Bhavani, Kalyani: she is named first by her relation to Shiva and only later as Tripurasundari, Kameshwari, Rajarajeshwari — the goddess of Srividya, worshipped through the Sri Chakra and the fifteen-syllabled mantra. That is the background this text sits against, and it explains why the archana is offered to a yantra as often as to an image. Tradition holds that the full Srividya practice needs initiation from a guru; the ashtottara does not, and that is the point of having it. In Karnataka the Srividya line runs through Shringeri, where Shankara is held to have installed the Sri Chakra before Sharadamba, and through Kollur Mookambika. Kumkuma is the offering, red the colour, Friday the day.

How and when to chant

Friday, morning after a bath or at the evening lamp, facing east. Red flowers and kumkuma at each name; some do the whole archana with kumkuma alone, which is the usual practice before a Sri Chakra. Naivedya is simple — payasa, or jaggery and coconut. During Sharada Navaratri it is offered daily through the nine nights, and on the Friday and the Ashtami of that fortnight most of all. If you keep a Sri Chakra at home, the names are said facing it; if not, an image or a kumkuma-marked plate serves. Those who have taken initiation add their mantra japa after; those who have not, stop at the names.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Lalita Ashtottara and the Lalita Sahasranama?
The count and the setting. The Sahasranama has a thousand names and comes from the Brahmanda Purana, taught by Hayagriva to Agastya; it takes half an hour or more. The Ashtottara has a hundred and eight and is meant for a household archana with an offering at each name. Same goddess, different scale.
Is the Lalita Trishati a third text?
Yes. The Trishati has three hundred names, built on the fifteen syllables of the panchadashi mantra, twenty names to each syllable. So there are three: a hundred and eight, three hundred, and a thousand. The Trishati is the one most closely tied to formal Srividya practice and initiation.
Do I need initiation to recite the Lalita Ashtottara?
No. Initiation is required in the tradition for the panchadashi and shodashi mantras and for formal Sri Chakra worship, not for reciting names. The ashtottara is recited freely at home. If you want the mantra practice behind it, that is when a guru is sought.
Which day should the archana be done?
Friday, morning or evening. Sharada Navaratri is her season, particularly the Ashtami. Some keep it on the Pournami as well, since the full moon is associated with Tripurasundari. Outside those, any Friday through the year is the settled household practice.
What is offered during the archana?
Kumkuma above all, and red flowers. Before a Sri Chakra the whole archana is often done with kumkuma alone, a pinch at each name. Naivedya stays simple: payasa, or jaggery with coconut. Red cloth under the image or yantra is common but not required.
Is Lalita the same as Rajarajeshwari and Kameshwari?
Yes, all names of the same goddess within this list. Tripurasundari is her most formal title, Rajarajeshwari and Kameshwari are among the hundred and eight. Karnataka temples to Rajarajeshwari and the goddess at Kollur Mookambika are worshipped within this same Srividya frame.
Can it be recited alongside the Sahasranama?
It commonly is. The usual household order is the ashtottara for the daily or weekly archana and the Sahasranama on Fridays, Navaratri or a Pournami when there is time to sit. Doing both in one sitting is fine; the ashtottara is usually said last, with the offerings.
